The concept is simple. We receive donations that we turn into funds; we then pool the funds together and invest the money with world renowned fund managers who invest conservatively to allow for consistent returns. The interest or income earned on these funds is then returned to the community in the form of grants. The endowed principal stays invested and continues to produce in perpetuity.

Community foundations are one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic networks dedicated to building and strengthening communities in Canada. In Canada today, there are over 150 community foundations with combined assets of more than $2.3 billion. In 2005, they made grants of over $115 million to support local priorities across the country.

Who Give to Community Foundations?

What is an Endowed Fund?

Donors or groups of donors create an endowed fund by setting their investment aside in a special account that will be invested for a future use. The income earned from these funds is used to produce grants. The principal contributed remains intact, ensuring that an award can always be generated on an annual basis.

History of the Burlington Community Foundation

The need for the Burlington Community Foundation was recognized and pursued by a group of dedicated and carrying volunteers that worked with the highly respected leaders of the Hamilton Community Foundation. The Burlington Community Foundation has been in existence since 1999. We currently hold $5.1 million in funds and have granted over $1 million back into the community.
